About Dr Ahuja

Entrepreneurship and Leadership

In 1986, Dr Ahuja founded Cromwell IVF, one of the UK’s early private fertility centres, and in 2004, he established JD Healthcare, now a leading independent fertility provider that encompasses London Women’s Clinic, Kind iVF, London Egg Bank and London Sperm Bank.

His leadership philosophy combines ambition with compassion: building clinics that are not only centres of scientific excellence but also welcoming, inclusive spaces for all patients. He has been a consistent advocate for equitable access to fertility treatment, supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals, single women and others historically underrepresented in reproductive healthcare.

Early Career and Scientific Foundations

Dr Kamal Ahuja began his career in reproductive science at the University of Cambridge, where he undertook doctoral research in reproductive physiology under Professor Robert Edwards, the Nobel Prize–winning pioneer behind the world’s first IVF birth.

Working during a defining period in the development of assisted conception, he was guided by the mentorship of Edwards, Patrick Steptoe and Jean Purdy. These early experiences instilled not only scientific rigour but also a lifelong commitment to compassionate, patient-centred care - values that continue to guide him today.

Scientific Contributions and Clinical Development

From his early work in embryology, including contributions to the first set of IVF triplets in the UK, Dr Ahuja has always sought to combine innovation with accessibility. Over the decades, he expanded his focus beyond the laboratory, helping underserved regions gain access to fertility treatment and pioneering approaches such as egg sharing programmes. His work reflects a belief that science should serve people first, ensuring patients feel supported and empowered throughout their fertility journey.

Policy, Ethics and Regulatory Engagement

Dr Ahuja has also played a thoughtful role in ethical and regulatory discussions surrounding assisted reproduction. He has engaged with the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), advocating for practical, patient-focused regulation that balances innovation with safety. He approaches these conversations with curiosity, empathy and the perspective that patient needs should always remain central to policy decisions.

Fertility Papers and Publications

Beyond the clinic, Dr Ahuja is a respected academic and thought leader. He founded the International Journal of Fertility and currently serves as Chairman of Reproductive BioMedicine Online (RBMO), continuing to shape research and policy in reproductive medicine. Through his publications, he strives to share knowledge openly, mentor the next generation of fertility specialists, and keep patients informed about advances in care.
