Egg Freezing: The Real Reasons Behind The Decision
News that US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has frozen her eggs at 36 spread quickly, and with it came a wave of women talking openly about egg freezing, many for the first time. At London Women's Clinic, we see this every day. Here is what our patients have told us, and why a story like this matters.
What Is Egg Freezing?
Egg freezing (also called oocyte cryopreservation) is the process of collecting and freezing a woman's eggs so they can be used to try for a pregnancy later in life. It is one of the most common fertility preservation options available today, offering flexibility for women who are not ready to start a family but want to protect their fertility for the future. Egg freezing in London is widely available through private fertility clinics, with costs, timelines and success rates varying by provider.
This article looks at why people really choose egg freezing, what the process involves day to day, and what it costs — using real patient insight from our Research Fellow's interviews, alongside the public conversation sparked by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's decision to freeze her own eggs.
Fitting Fertility Around Life
Ocasio-Cortez described freezing her eggs as something she had to weave around the demands of Congress — a balancing act rather than a single decision. If you have looked into egg freezing yourself, you will likely recognise that feeling. Dr Ellen Davenport-Pleasance who conducted research into egg freezing at LWC hears it often in her interviews with patients. The hardest part is rarely the medicine. It is the logistics. As one patient told her:
"You've got to be organised, haven't you? Because of course, there's different scans on different days."
Breaking The Silence Around Egg Freezing
Ocasio-Cortez chose to document her journey publicly, even live streaming an injection on social media. That kind of openness is still unusual, and egg freezing can feel like something you are not supposed to talk about, at work or even with friends.
Dr Davenport-Pleasance's research reflects this: some patients kept it from colleagues and managers entirely, while others found that friends had been quietly wondering about their own fertility, without ever knowing who to ask.
The Real Picture Behind Egg Freezing
You might picture egg freezing as something only ambitious career women choose, but our own data tells a different story. Around 90% of our patients freeze their eggs for elective reasons, with the remainder citing medical, clinical or incidental factors.
Your reasons might be about timing, about not yet having found the right partner, or simply about not wanting to feel rushed into a decision. As one patient explained:
"I didn't want to be rushed into having to make a big, consequential decision around who I partnered with, who I would marry, who I would have a family with."
For many, it is the emotional relief that stays with them, more than the medical process itself.
"I felt held. I felt truly held by them," one patient said of her care.
"It is so empowering as women to be able to have just an extra layer of choice around fertility," another reflected.
What You Were Never Taught About Fertility
Most of us are never given a proper education in our own reproductive health, and the realities of fertility decline tend to be something you have to go looking for yourself, often later than you would like.
Ocasio-Cortez raised the same issue on Instagram, saying women are "not taught about our bodies" or "prepared for our own lives." One of our patients, who froze her eggs at 39, put it simply:
"I wish I'd done this earlier, but 10 years ago the information out there about this was quite scarce."
So How Much Does Egg Freezing Cost?
Cost is one of the first questions most people ask, and rightly so as egg freezing is a significant financial decision as well as a personal one. Prices for egg freezing in London and across the UK vary depending on the clinic, the number of treatment cycles needed, medication requirements, and ongoing storage fees.

Why This Conversation Matters
Fertility decisions, whenever and however they are made, ask a lot of you: the injections, the appointments, the waiting, and everything in between. By sharing her experience so publicly, Ocasio-Cortez has done something generous. She has made space for the next question, and the one after that, for anyone still working out what their own choices might look like.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How much does egg freezing cost in London? Costs vary by clinic and typically include consultation, egg collection, medication and annual storage fees. You can find out egg freezing prices here
- Who chooses to freeze their eggs? While egg freezing is often associated with career-focused women, most patients choose it for a range of elective, personal reasons — not solely career timing. Around 90% of patients at our clinic freeze their eggs electively.
- At what age should I consider freezing my eggs? Fertility naturally declines with age, and earlier freezing generally yields more and higher-quality eggs. A consultation with a fertility specialist can help determine the right timing for your individual circumstances.
- Is egg freezing confidential? Yes. Many patients choose not to share their decision with employers, colleagues or even friends, and clinics treat all treatment as strictly confidential.

‘Myself and my husband owe it all to london womens clinic, they were amazing from start to finish. We previously were under another clinic and decided to make the change due to many reasons and we are so glad we did. They treat everyone as individuals, not everyones fertility journeys are the same. The small team at Colchester make it so personable not to mention how amazing all 4 women are that work here, their knowledge empathy and listening skills simply cannot be found at any other clinic. The list goes on as to why I would recommend LWC but everyone likes a to the point review. They genuinely care they dont treat you like a number and they help you through every hurdle that occurs. Our little boy wouldn't be possible without these 4, each of them play a bigger part than they realise. 💙’

‘We started our treatment in July, and I have had a very positive experience with this clinic. Lorraine on reception especially made me feel like nothing was too much trouble and always knew me by name which is such a nice personal touch, especially at such a sensitive time. Along with Dr Safwat Ashour he always recommended the best treatment for us and just had such a kind caring attitude towards us while explaining our options and being very honest with us too. One of the nurses (so sorry I can’t remember your name) she only recently started in July and I felt so at home with her and cared for. To finish off we are currently pregnant with our IVF miracle all thanks you this clinic. Thank you all so much, no thanks would ever be enough for the gift you have given us!’

‘Came here after my treatment at LWC Darlington as I needed to be part of the failed implantation team. The care and communication was second to none. It was everything and more, no question to my coordinator was never too much. They were extremely accommodating when I had to travel from up north multiple times and were always happy to let me have my then 2 year old son come to monitoring appointments. I’m grateful for their expertise in failed implantation as my 3rd egg collection was successful and my fresh transfer worked first time & I’ve just gave birth to my second LWC baby in September 2026. Would always recommend LWC - especially London Bridge / Harley Street.’
