At London Women’s Clinic (LWC) Cambridge, we combine a rich legacy of pioneering fertility innovation with a modern, patient-centred approach. Located in the heart of Cambridge - the birthplace of in vitro fertilisation (IVF) - our decision to return here marks a revisiting of IVF’s origins, but with a difference.
While our clinic continues the tradition of excellence established by Nobel Laureate Sir Robert Edwards and Dr. Patrick Steptoe more than 40 years ago, this next chapter is shaped by greater inclusivity, accessibility and personalised care.
Today, we’re proud to bring to Cambridge state-of-the-art fertility care tailored to the diverse needs of local patients.
An IVF Legacy Rooted in Cambridge
The story of IVF began in Cambridge. It was here that Sir Robert Edwards, Dr. Patrick Steptoe and Jean Purdy achieved the first-ever IVF success, leading to the birth of Louise Joy Brown. This landmark breakthrough laid the foundation for modern fertility care.
Dr Edwards later co-founded London Women’s Clinic, establishing a legacy of innovation and compassion that continues to guide our work today. It was also in Cambridge that Dr Kamal Ahuja, now Scientific Director of LWC, began his close friendship with Dr Edwards and Dr Steptoe and recalls his early interactions with Jean Purdy. Dr Edwards also acted as a mentor to Dr Ahuja - an influence that continues to shape and elevate our approach to patient-centred fertility care.
Our newly opened clinic at 52 Mawson Road, Cambridge, represents the next chapter in this ongoing story.
Over just a few months, our team has celebrated numerous successful pregnancies - a testament to our commitment to advancing fertility care.

These genuine reviews reflect the care, professionalism and compassion our team strives to deliver every day:
We’re proud to welcome individuals and couples from across the region—from Stowmarket to Northampton, Peterborough to Luton, as well as many nearby towns and communities - who have found a warm atmosphere, professional care and genuine empathy that set LWC Cambridge apart.
Exceptional Fertility Care Nationwide
London Women’s Clinic is proud to provide IVF and related fertility treatments to around 8,000 patients each year, consistently achieving high success rates. Our commitment to robust research and responsiveness to emerging social trends drives everything we do.
Over a decade ago, recognising a growing need for donor-assisted fertility treatments, we established two vital resources: London Sperm Bank (founded in 2010) and London Egg Bank (founded in 2013). Both banks offer extensive selections of UK-based, fully screened donors, accessible not only to our Cambridge patients but also nationwide through partnerships with licensed UK clinics.
Building upon these foundations, we’ve continued to expand rapidly. Over the past two years alone, we’ve added six new clinics, increasing our nationwide network to 17 clinics with further growth planned. This ongoing expansion embodies our mission to make world-class fertility care truly accessible to everyone across the UK.

Specialist Fertility Care Tailored for Patients Over 40
At London Women’s Clinic Cambridge, we understand that fertility needs change with age. With conception rates for women over 40 more than doubling since 1990, we’re committed to providing comprehensive fertility options tailored specifically to this age group.
Our comprehensive fertility programme for women over 40 includes:
- Personalised consultations with fertility specialists to assess individual circumstances.
- Fertility health checks such as hormone testing and pelvic ultrasound scans.
- Advanced IVF treatments, including Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy (PGT-A), which improves the selection of viable embryos, significantly increasing success rates.
Additionally, our egg donation programme, facilitated through the London Egg Bank, offers women over 40 the opportunity to achieve pregnancy with success rates of 50-60%, utilising frozen donor eggs from younger, rigorously screened donors.
“It is essential for patients over 40 to have a clear, informed understanding of their individual chances of success and the best possible treatment pathways,” advises Professor Nick Macklon, Medical Director at LWC.
At LWC Cambridge, we ensure every patient is supported with expert guidance and personalised care throughout their fertility journey.
Inclusive Fertility Support for LGBTQIA+ and Single Parents
In the first six months at LWC Cambridge, we have proudly welcomed a diverse patient base, including many from the LGBTQIA+ and single-parent communities—groups who have trusted LWC for over 30 years. Our inclusive fertility treatments feature the UK’s largest donor insemination programme and our innovative Shared Motherhood option.
Developed in collaboration with Professor Susan Golombok’s family research group at the University of Cambridge, this groundbreaking programme - where one partner provides the eggs and the other carries the pregnancy - has gained worldwide recognition for its innovation and success.
Beyond treatment, LWC Cambridge is a proud advocate for fertility equality. We actively support inclusive care through initiatives like the IVF Equality Manifesto, developed in partnership with DIVA magazine and our involvement in organising the Familymakers Show in Brighton - a bespoke event created for the LGBTQIA+ community. We are committed to ensuring all families, regardless of structure, feel supported and valued throughout their fertility journey. We look forward to bringing similar initiatives to the Cambridge community soon.
